What happens in a session?

Assessment

During an initial session, I do an assessment of my client or patient to establish their needs and possible clinical goals. We then use one or more specific techniques that is appropriate and beneficial – Music Therapy is a client-led approach, which means that nothing is ever forced and the client or patient has freedom of choice.

My approaches and techniques

I use a blended approach of receptive and active music therapy techniques. This means that during a session, there could be music-listening and writing or drawing (receptive) as well as music-making in the form of free improvisation, song-writing and lyric analysis. I focus on keyboard, djembe drums and various percussion instruments, as well as breathwork and vocal psychotherapy.

Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM)

This unique method is a specialised field within Music Therapy that uses selected sequences of classical music to evoke sensory and emotional responses in the listener. It is a depth approach in which inner experiences are expressed through bodily sensations and imagery or symbols that are offered up by the psyche.

There is a strong Jungian approach in the analysis of the experience, and in my practice I also combine it with dream work, art, improvisation, writing and the Mandala Assessment Research Instrument (MARI®). I am currently still a GIM-trainee, which means that I still undergo supervision and charge a reduced fee for sessions. To find out more, visit www.gim-sa.co.za.

MARI® (Mandala Assessment Research Instrument)

MARI® is a psychological assessment that includes 39 symbol cards and 45 colour cards. These cards are used to reveal inner truths by engaging the whole brain so that both conscious and unconscious information can be accessed. MARI is based in Transpersonal psychology, and has a spiritual and positive basis. It can be used in individual and group settings. For more information, visit www.maricreativeresources.com.
